All those years shredding and wailing with an imaginary guitar will pay off Saturday when would-be air guitar champions raise furious fingers to the sky.
Anyone can enter the second Thai Air Guitar Championship taking place at On Nut music venue Brownstone, with a B10,000 cash prize to be split between the three best rock ‘n roll mimes.
But only the champion will win a trip to Finland to represent Thailand at the World Championships.
“1st place will also get their round trip flight to Finland for the World Championship paid for. They must have a valid passport to qualify for the Grand prize,” organizer Jacob “Airlectric Eel” Conger told Coconuts.
Entering the competition costs B500, and entries will be capped at 20 participants. First place wins B5,000, with B3,000 and B2,000 going to second and third, respectively.
Conger said there are still slots available.
“I have nine confirmed, many others have shown interest but have not confirmed yet,” he added. Thai hard rock band Hard Boy will open the event with some actual guitar playing.
The first Air Guitar Championships were held in 2019 at the Khaosan Comedy Club. Performers mimed performances by rock bands Queen, Metallica, and Greta Van Fleet as well as a power metal rendition of the Game of Thrones theme. COVID-19 put the kibosh on the event in 2020 and 2021.
Entrance is free to watch the frenzied action.
The competition runs 8pm to midnight on Saturday at Brownstone, which is about 3 kilometers from BTS On Nut.
