CLASSIC TRUNKS
Timo
Why you’ll like it: Simple, block-color or graphic-patterned men’s swim trunks. The fitting is excellent, as are the materials.
What to buy: Stick to the “long-prep” cut (B3,500), which comes a few inches above the knee but still has a fairly tailored shape.
What to avoid: The “prep” and “captain” cuts, which might just be a bit too revealing for the fashion-weary.
Worth the cash? Pairs we bought two years ago still feel like new, and we’ve worn them to death. So yes, especially compared to the international competition.
International alternatives: Orlebar Brown, Saturdays Surf NYC
Available at: Next to Normal, G/F, CentralWorld, Ratchadamri Rd., 02-646-1847. BTS Chit Lom.

BASIC TEES
Wardrobe Ministry
Why you’ll like it: Nothing more than very basic pocket tees that fit nicely. And at a price you can afford.
What to buy: Aside from the Soft-Wash pocket tee (B790), the Oxford button-down shirt (B2,350) is the only other thing they design right now, but visit their Facebook and you’ll also find some vintage pieces from brands like Brooks Brothers.
What to avoid: The brand began as a menswear blog with a fetish for GQ-style street fashion. Don’t be tempted to try their tips on how to wear a double-brested sports coat. You’ll look ridiculous.
Worth the cash? Yes
International alternatives: American Apparel, J.Crew, Engineered Garments
SIMPLE SNEAKERS
London Brown
Why you’ll like it: These guys have been around for several years now (well, since 2012), clocking up the kind of following you don’t get from making cheap crap. Their designs are classic and basic, but with that slight edge of trend awareness.
What to buy: We like the sneaker collection, especially the all-white Smith (at a totally reasonable B1,990) and, if you’re willing to go just a little edgy, the Theo (B3,990). Also check out the Sean slip-ons (B3,390).
What to avoid: Anything with tassels, anything with monkstraps. The boat shoes (not quite as nice as Sperry’s but the same price).
Worth the cash? They can get steep, but are nowhere near the prices of the brands they seem to most commonly reference.
International alternatives: Common Projects, Eytys, A.P.C.
QUALITY EYEWEAR
Rosemanclub
Why you’ll like it: Simple acetate frames designed here and made in that stronghold of envy-inducing eyewear; central Japan.
What to buy: We’re yet to see any frames we don’t like from these guys. Let your face-shape dictate between the Wayfarer-like Ryu (B3,950) and off-round Mori (B3,950)
What to avoid: If you’re unsure whether you’ve got what it takes to pull off the sun-lens clip-ons (additional B550), then you probably haven’t.
Worth the cash? Easily. Finding glasses that don’t look whack for sub-B10,000 is a rare thing. These are not your Chatuchack fashion-frame rip-offs.
International alternatives: Yellows Plus, Eyevan, Garrett Leight
RAW JEANS
Nama Denim
Why you’ll like it: They’re locally made but using selvedge denim sourced from Okayama, Japan. The cuts are clean and the prices affordable, starting from just B3,000. The recently launched premium line, too, will barely cost you B6,000.
What to buy: The Nama Premium NP-001 (B5,600) may sound a bit fancy, with its deep indigo dyes, blue selvedge stitching, gold-gilded solid brass buttons and a hand-stamped horse leather patch, but it actually makes for a pretty straight alternative to your over-worn APC Petit Standards.
What to avoid: We’re not as sold on the label’s cowboy chic range of shirts.
Worth the cash? No doubt
International alternatives: A.P.C., Japan Blue, Nudie
Available at: Room 2088, 2/F, Terminal 21, 2/88 Sukhumvit Soi 19, 08-989-2723. BTS Asoke.

CASUAL SHIRTS
SSAP
Why you’ll like it: Lauded by online tastemakers Hypebeast and Selectism, this Thai brand that started in NYC integrates Thai indigo dying techniques—and touches of camo—into versatile streetwear and workwear.
What to buy: The Hickory denim work shirt (B4,540) or the black Oxford shirt with camo detail (B2580). Stay on trend with the denim track pants (B2650).
What to avoid: The SSAP NYC college-style T-shirts—do you really need more acronyms blazed across your chest?
Worth the cash? Compared to the imported alternatives, most definitely.
International alternatives: Our Legacy, Norse Projects, Carhartt WIP
Available at: Gin & Milk, 3/F, Siam Center, Rama 1 Rd., 02- 658-1000 (ext.1376), BTS Siam.
