We’ve sampled the special menu Geoffrey Deetz concocted for the month of July at The Seafood Bar (41 Somerset Lake Point, Sukhumvit Soi 16, 02-663-8863) and you should too. Deetz cooks American cuisine with New Orleans influences (but also light touches of New England and Tex-Mex). The result is particularly toothsome for our Thai-tuned palates, thanks to a liberal use of chilis—a much wider range the ones traditionally found here. His gumbo in particular, elevates comfort food to new heights. The rich, thick stew is made with an incredibly intense stock. Poured over squids stuffed with bell-pepper, onion and celery (B550), it’s a real must-have. Other highlights include the squid ink fettucini with bay shrimp and ono ogo crème sauce (B320): ono ogo is a tasty, protein rich seaweed grown in Hawaii that adds a great balance to this smooth creamy dish. Taste these dishes and more from Jul 1-30, either a la carte or as a set dinner (B1,500 with a glass of Champagne, 6-11pm Tue-Sat), as an all-you-can-eat Sunday lunch (B1,500, 12-3pm), or with specials and live jazz on Sun evenings (6-10pm). Book in advance.
