Ojo is still the highest Mexican food restaurant in Bangkok, coming to us from the careful hands of chefs Francesco Paco Ruano and Alonso Luna Zarate with just a tinge of Thai in the dishes on the 76th floor of The Standard.
Let’s begin with the starters. The ensalada de la estacion (B490) is salad laden with two tomato varieties, including the Mexican variant tomatillos, heirloom tomato-purslane, and grilled greens, all of which are accompanied with a bed of fresh burrata. The taquito de cerdo (B520) features chickpea taco and arbol chili mayo sauce mixed with pork head terrine and caldillo.
In the hongos en su jugo (B1,200) Chef Paco serves a large dish that brings smoked mushrooms with a mushroom jus accompanied by white beans and green onion—an indulgent dish that should be on the list for Bangkok’s vegans.
For the main, Chef Paco takes slow-cooked lamb and cooks it with an agave-based mezcal. To really enjoy the lamb barbacoa (B2,200), pick a slice of tortilla and season with salsa verde and burning hot xo salsa macha.
If you’re keen to get in on the festivities this weekend, Ojo will be celebrating the Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) on Sunday with a collaboration with Chef Billy Otis of Taqueria Super Macho in Hong Kong to dish out unlimited tacos, with Sandeep Kumar and Cagri Teker serving up cocktails and DJ Hijo del Maiz and DJ Rui spinning from 8pm onward. Tickets for the event are available via
Megatix.
