A Telok Ayer yong tau fu shop gets a hipster makeover
This hole-in-the-wall is now very happening.
Yong tau foo has a special place in every Singaporean's heart, with its mix-and-match bowls of tofu, meats, dumplings and veggies. And now, there's a yong tau foo specialty eatery that's officially hipster-approved.
Fu Lin Yong Tofu at 127 Telok Ayer Street has recently undergone a major revamp. For better or for worse, long gone are the days when it looked like a generic kopitiam with wooden stools and tables. Now it looks like a generic hipster eatery instead: exposed brick and concrete, industrial-style high stools, dark wooden suspended shelves and clean-cut mirrors.
Here's how it works: you can get your same yong tau fu for lunch (with the same quality of food, the same pick-your-own-ingredients counter and the same attentive aunties) among chic surrounds at lunch. But the place turns into a full-fledged tapas restaurant and bar at 3pm. They've got a selection of cocktails, sake, whiskey and beer for a post-lunch or after-work drink.
