Chef Luca Appino may now have a hand in Pizza Massilia, Il Fumo and Vesper, but this is where it all started. The weekly specials show his unwavering commitment to using fresh, seasonal produce. Its quiet nook down the narrow Sukhumvit 49, found inside high-end retail space Terrace 49, also makes it one of the more peaceful locations you can choose to spend your time. Bite into some of Bangkok’s best Italian fine dining dishes, or just kick back with a glass of wine—both are great options here.
Terrace 49, Sukhumvit Soi 49, 02-204-1731. Open Tue-Sun 11:30am-3pm; daily 5:30-11pm. BTS Phrom Phong
Nestled in the Escape Hotel in breezy Hua Hin, Red Coral dishes out fresh seafood and authentic Thai favorites amid simple decor—exposed dark beams, blonde wood tables and red basket lanterns overhead. The open-air space is roomy and tranquil thanks to a nearby courtyard and garden, and the main beach is just a few strides away. Once again, Niks Anuman-Rajadhon is the man behind the drinks here.
25/2 Petchkasem Road, Hua Hin, 063 187 0777. Open daily 6:30am-11pm

This ever-popular restaurant in Ari draws in throngs of affluent 20-somethings, who are as eager to be seen in its raw, modernist decor as to sample the crowd-pleasers on its seemingly endless menu of European comfort food, sushi and cocktails. You can expect a wait for a table, whether in the big wooden house in the back, the glass box with exposed concrete pillars or the alfresco terrace out the front.
Ari Soi 4, 02-619-6886. Open daily 5pm-midnight. BTS Ari
It might be a little bit hard to find tucked away on Naklua road, Pattaya’s Spa Cafe is well worth the mini-adventure. The outside terrace is filled with large cushioned sofas and deck chairs with surrounding vines that create a very intimate and exclusive feel. Step inside and you’ll find a quaint and cozy cafe setting with simple modern decor, very friendly staff and a respectable selection of desserts and coffee.

This venue in Ayutthaya recently brought back it’s live music events in the backyard, which are arguably the best sit-outdoors-and-drink events in the area. Without a chair in sight, the venue’s backyard packs out with plush pillows and short wooden tables as local artists featured on The Voice blast away through a modest sound system. It’s all right next to the Chao Phraya River, and might just be chill enough for a mid-afternoon nap.
71/1 moo 6 koh rean Ayuthaya, 094 224 2223. Open daily 10am-9:30pm

Starchitect Duangrit Bunnag followed up Never Ending Summer with this Euro bistro with a vast terrace that leads right up to the water. It makes for one of the better places in Bangkok to enjoy a relaxing breeze while digging into comfort food like Fisherman’s Stew (B240), crab cakes (B350) and beer-battered fish and chips (B550) go down as easily as bar manager Dheeradon Dissara's Thai-infused cocktails.
41/5 Charoen Nakorn Rd., 02-861-0953. Open daily 11am-11pm
Nestled in a garden down the surprisingly peaceful and residential Thonglor Soi 7, this restaurant does Mexican food that's so good that in-the-know crowds have taken notice and we highly recommend you book ahead. From a shipping container-turned-kitchen, the Mexican owners, two brothers, serve up traditional Mexican cuisine like the delicious corn tortilla carnitas whose pork is fried in lard, orange, beer and spices. Wash it down with a frothy pisco sour.
145 Thonglor Soi 7, 090-913-2131. Open daily 5-11pm. BTS Thong Lo
