On Sep 27, Comet Records BKK’s Golden Triangle party at Soy Sauce Factory adds to Bangkok’s growing list of parties taking place in galleries rather than bars and clubs. If your inner culture vulture is only ignited by the promise of booze, here are Bangkok’s other best galleries for a drink.

Bridge

Charoenkrung Soi 51, 086-986-9421. Open daily 10am-midnight. BTS Saphan Taksin.

This new café-slash-art space occupies a renovated Chareonkrung shophouse at the foot of the iconic abandoned Sathorn Unique skyscraper, a short walk from BTS Saphan Taksin. Its opening group exhibition, Threshold, featured a who’s who of local up-and-coming artist. But that’s not all it offers. The charming rooftop is perfect for a drink, and the tastefully decorated front-of-house (whitewashed brick walls, filament bulbs, blond wood) makes a good, cheap breakfast.

GOJA Gallery Café

5/2 Sukhumvit 71, Soi Pridi 3. Open Tue-Sun midnight-9pm. BTS Phra Khanong.

Behind MaxValu, just a few minutes’ walk from BTS Phra Khanong, this shophouse gallery boasts a minimal interior lined with art pieces. There are DJ decks in one corner, while on the other side of the room is a makeshift drip coffee bar and a fridge full of beers. Past exhibitions have focused on street art from Thai and Japanese artists, and Japanese photography.

Speedy Grandma

672/50-52 Charoenkrung Soi 28, 089-508-3859. Open Tue-Sun 11am-7pm.

In a renovated but still raw-looking shophouse, this gallery-cum-bar’s claim to fame is raucous opening parties that have made memorable occasions of exhibitions, performance shows, experimental film screenings and guerilla flea markets. Expect to drink with a young, bohemian crowd of both Thais and expats, as well as clued-in visiting artists of various disciplines.
