Time for a Chareonkrung crawl.

On Saturday, Sep 20, the recently opened Cinema Winehouse (59/61 Samsen Rd., 083-554-0170) hosts Visual Lounge Reggae, a reggae night featuring visuals, sangria and music by the Bangkok Reggae Appreciation Society. Even if reggae riddims are not your thing, it’s a fine excuse to visit an interesting new venue, which combines brunch spot, wine bar and film screening lounge in one colonial-style shophouse. Before you get there, start at Bridge and make your way up the river into the Old Town.

Bridge

This new café-slash-art space occupies a renovated Chareonkrung shophouse at the foot of the iconic abandoned Sathorn Unique skyscraper, a short walk from BTS Saphan Taksin. Its opening group exhibition, Threshold, featured a who’s who of local up-and-coming artists whose multi-disciplinary works filled all four floors. The tastefully decorated front-of-house (whitewashed brick walls, filament bulbs, blond wood) is a prime spot for a cheap and cheerful breakfast, while there’s also a charming rooftop that just about manages a river view.  Charoenkrung Soi 51, 086-986-9421. BTS Saphan Taksin. Open daily 10-12am. www.fb.com/bridgeartspace

Soulbar

This small shophouse off Chareonkrung, not far from River City Mall and Si Phraya Pier, is still a work in progress. By night, it resembles Adhere 13th, the long-standing blues club in Phra Athit, with soul and funk gigs every Thursday to Sunday and jam sessions on Wednesday. By day it’s open for coffee, making for a soulful spot for some Chinatown people-watching. 945 Charoenkrung Rd., 095-521-1541. Open Tue-Sun 8am-12am. www.fb.com/livesoulbarbangkok
