The Bang Fai Phaya Nark Festival, a Northern Thai tradition, features stunning fire balls rising from the Mekong River.

North Thailand celebration, the Bang Fai Phaya Nark Festival is set to happen in October 10-16.

The yet-unexplained spectacle phenomenon—glowing orbs seem to rise from the Mekong River—is traditionally believed to be the work of Naga, a great serpent of the underworld. And locals partake in plenty of religious activities to appease Naga.

Some rituals include the Tak Bat Thevo ceremony (alms giving to monks), where people offer up sticky rice wrapped in coconut leaves. There are performances and cultural processions too.

The best place to see the lights is Thai city Nong Khai. When in town, stay at boutique establishment The Pantawee Hotel, which has an on-premise restaurant offering Thai and Western food as well as a spa pool. Rates start at B2,975 (S$118). To get to Nong Khai, fly from Bangkok to Udon Thani (from US$97 (S$124) return with Thai AirAsia) and then take a 40-minute bus to Nong Khai.
