Public Art
Our city is known more for reverence to retail than adoration of art, but the BMA is at least trying to change our perception. With the BACC’s upper floors tending to be quiet (maybe due to a lack of decent, consistent exhibitions), the BMA have taken the fight outside. In a B31 million project, initiated by former Governor Apirak Kosayothin back in 2009, they commissioned 10 sculptures by leading national artists to be displayed in parks around Bangkok. So far seven have been unveiled and can be spotted in the following locations: Wachirabentad (Train Park), Lumpini, Tonburirom Park, Prapokklao bridge and Sathorn Bridge park. Each is designed to match the surroundings it sits in and while they’re not quite Jeff Koons and cutting edge, at least they aren’t all elephants.
