Last week, Phra Khanong cocktail haunt Amaris welcomed a packed house as some of Thailand’s creative icons and noted artistic influencers joined a guest shift by Jane Kaew-yod—among the country’s most accomplished mixologists—to celebrate tradition one of Thailand’s oldest aged white spirits: Ruang Khao Siam Sapphire. The brand is thought of as a fusion of Eastern and Western distilling wisdom, merging centuries-old methods of spirits production with more modern touches, like aging in ex-oak barrels.
The invite-only event was by the likes of Yutthana Boonaom, the legendary radio DJ and a pioneer of the country’s music festival industry, as well as Anothai Niruttimetee, a massively famous graphic artist most well known for her large, bombastic wall paintings found all over Bangkok.
Although a special cocktail menu was developed for the event, the standout drink was a creation named “Resonance.” Inspired by the two celebrity creatives in attendance and their respective impacts on both music and street art. By seeing ocean waves as an interpretation of the rhythmic qualities of music and fearlessness as an analog to creative freedom, the drink uses both seaweed and chili peppers as core ingredients to create a flavor profile that is smooth, drinkable, and punchy all in one.
The crux of the event was to explore and promote the flavor profile of Thai-made white rum, specifically Siam Sapphire, which is made exclusively from Thai sugar cane honey, and aged in ex-oak barrels. With predominant notes of honey, caramel, and vanilla, the drink balanced well with the more pungent, tangy tastes of the acidic and spicy ingredients used in the cocktail list.
