After a two-month suspension, domestic air travel is back. But it’s not quite as simple as that.

 

Several Thai airlines, such as Nok Air (see below), have shared updated entry requirements for provinces across the country. Needless to say, before you book your flights, you should take a close look at these rules. 

 

Phuket, Ranong, Ubon Ratchathani, Khon Kaen, and Nan, for example, require travelers to have received either two doses of the Sinovac or Sinopharm vaccines or one jab of the AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson vaccines. The shots must have been administered at least 14 days prior to your trip as well. 

 

 

Destinations like Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Son, and Nakhon Si Thammarat, on the other hand, ask for proof of two jabs—Sinovac, Sinopharm, Moderna, and Pfizer—or a single jab of the AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Again, at least 14 days prior to your trip.

 

Certain provinces like Mae Sot and Chumphon, meanwhile, require quarantine regardless of your vaccination status. 

 

With health protocols and vaccine requirements varying from province to province, it’s doubtful domestic travel will return to normal in the immediate future. During a censure debate yesterday, the prime minister, Prayuth Chan-ocha, downplayed the October reopening he had called for months ago.

 

Vaccination rates have accelerated in recent weeks, however. Yesterday, Thailand administered more than 828,000 shots, bringing the total number of fully inoculated persons to a little over eight million in total. That amounts to roughly 12% of the population.
