Bangkok bids farewell to a local legend.

Just a day after it was announced that Bangkok restaurants are allowed to reopen for dine-in services, Coca, a Cantonese-style hotpot restaurant serving Bangkokians for more than five decades, announced on Facebook that they will shut down their long-standing branch at Siam Square.

Coca Holding, Coca’s parent company, cited the end of their lease, the pandemic, and the resulting economic instability as reasons for calling it quits at this location, as reported by Prachachart. Representatives of the company also said they are looking to scale down the size of all their restaurants in order to adapt to the changing dining behaviors of Bangkok residents.

Based on the word meaning “appetizing” in Mandarin, Coca launched in Thailand in 1957 as a 20-seat Cantonese restaurant. Today, it claims over 60 restaurants in 14 countries.

You can take one last nostalgic trip to Coca Siam Square until, well, today, May 18. Other branches of Coca remain open as usual, albeit in adherence to the dining restrictions enacted by Thai government officials.
