After the successful debut of TCDC’s Bangkok Design Week in early 2018, the week-long showcase of all things design-related is due to return between Jan 26-Feb 3, 2019.

Last time, a confluence of art installations, workshops and seminars culminated in an event that saw Charoenkrung’s galleries and bars collaborate for a buzzing evening of art, drinking and eating.

Under the theme of "Fusing Forward," the event’s second year promises to explore how the multidisciplinary approach to design is becoming stronger, blending traditional practices with modern technology. 

As before, organizers have put out an open call for designers, craftspeople, students, creative entrepreneurs and businesses to showcase their new projects and innovations in design. However, this year they’re casting the net wider than Thailand.

Bangkok Design Week will open on Jan 26, 6:30pm, with the world premiere of World in Motion - Bangkok, part of a documentary series by New York-based director/producers Graham Elliott and Roswitha Rodrigues.

The series explores how cities across the planet fuel the creative energy of their inhabitants. 

“Bangkok immediately piqued our interest, as it had a vibrant youth culture, which was fueling the art scene," Elliott explains. "Paradoxically, the shopping mall culture was really helping the art scene, with the need to fill the big screens and art spaces creating competition between the malls to exhibit the most innovative visuals. There seemed to be great work coming out of Bangkok and a thirst for outside influences.”

The episode was shot over four visits to Bangkok across a three year period and features members of the local art community, covering graffiti, motion graphics, fine art and photography.

The free screening will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A with the directors and some of the artists featured in the film. There will also be a free workshop with the directors on Jan 27, 2-5pm, “The New Creativity: Turning Information into Inspiration,” which will guide artists on how to harness today's constant stream of images, content and information into a creative resource for their work.

Further details of the schedule are yet to be announced, but more showcases, talks, workshops and networking opportunities are promised.
