Bangkok Art Biennale has announced the 75 artists that will participate in its debut edition kicking off this October.

 

The biennale's chief executive and artistic director, Prof Dr. Apinan Poshyananda made the announcement at a press conference on Mar 26, 

 

Joining the likes of Yugoslav performance artist Marina Abramovic, Japanese illustrator Yoshidomo Nara and China-born/France-based activist artist Huang Yong Ping announced previously will be Yayoi Kusama, the 89-year-old Japanese contemporary artist renowned for her polka dotted artworks; Japanese compatriot Yoshitomo Nara, known for his illustrations of children with very adult problems; Indonesian visual artist Heri Dono, Korean artist and large-scale sculptor Choi Jeong Hwa, and Singaporeans Kray Chen and Ho Tzu Nyen.

 

Also in attendance will be Western artists such as the Berlin-based, Scandinavian duo Elmgreen and Dragset, of Prada Marfa fame, while the works of the late American graffiti artist-turned painter Jean-Michel Basquiat will also be exhibited.

 

Some 36 Thai artists will also be represented at the four-month-long event including highly established names like Sakarin Krue-on, known for his elaborate large-scale installations with Thai cultural influences, and performance artist Chumpon Apisuk, as well as rising forces Kawita Vatanajyankur and Latthapon Korkiatarkul.

 

The Bangkok Art Biennale will take place between Nov 2018-Feb 2019, alongside the similarly named but unrelated Bangkok Biennial (Jul 7-Sep 3, 2018) and Thailand Biennale in Krabi (Nov 2, 2018-Feb 28, 2019). For the low-down on all three major art events, see our recent story.
