After almost 22 years in operation without any renovation done, Singapore Art Museum, a stalwart of contemporary Southeast Asian art in Singapore, is shutting its doors to the public to undergo a $90 million facelift. The new and improved SAM will be able to better accommodate large-scale installations and technologically demanding works when it reopens in 2021, according to a statement by the museum.

A link-bridge to 8Q, the other building belonging to SAM located across the street, will also be built to create a contiguous museum. During this upgrading period, 8Q will remain open, so those at the Bras Basah area can still go there for continued museum programming, including the annual Singapore Night Festival celebrations, the upcoming Imaginarium: To the Ends of the Earth exhibition opening on May 6, and other regular activities.
