Thinking about a short getaway for the upcoming long weekend? Make it happen.

Among Malaysia’s many tourist attractions, Singaporeans have always had a soft spot for its heritage cities. Whether it’s Melaka, George Town or even the old school parts of Kuala Lumpur, your journey through time is always complemented by good food and memorable moments. Despite its obvious charms, Ipoh had long been left out of this list. Not anymore, though. Three hours beyond KL by road or rail, and with Tigerair and Firefly offering cheap, direct flights out of Singapore, there’s never been a better time to discover the city. Here’s why you should visit.

The History

There is a certain appeal in finding a place that’s so much like home, yet so different. Get an early start and follow Ipoh’s well planned heritage trail – taking you past landmarks like the Ipoh Railway Station, the Town Hall and Old Post Office, the Ipoh Padang and the Birch Memorial Clock Tower.

The Food

Ipoh hor fun needs no introduction, but the city has many other culinary claims to fame. There’s ayam tauge (chicken and bean sprouts), kaya puffs, ikan bakar (charcoal-grilled fish) egg caramel custard and so much more.

The Drinks

If you’re a fan of white coffee, then you’ll know that Ipoh is its spiritual home. Visit the birthplace of OldTown White Coffee, try the rustic versions of the brew at simple coffee shops and load up on the dozens of different instant varieties  to bring home with you.

On the boozy side of things, Sinhalese Bar is a priceless piece of old Malaya – a watering hole that’s remained largely unchanged since it opened in 1931. For a taste of Ipoh’s modern nightlife, head up to The Deck Gastrobar which sits atop the WEIL Hotel (incidentally a great place to stay, too).

The Art

If the heritage trail gave you an appetite for seeing Ipoh on foot, then you’ll be happy to know that there’s also a trail around the famed wall murals that make up Art of OldTown. Created by Lithuanian artist Ernest Zacharevic, these Instagram-worthy works dot the city center.

The Shopping

While Ipoh might not have towering malls with big brands, it has a secret weapon – Gerbang Malam. The thriving street is filled with all your favorite night market merchandise along with shops and stalls hawking the best souvenirs – local produce.

The Theme Parks

Touted as Malaysia’s top action and adventure family holiday destination, The Lost World of Tambun combines seven attractions including a water park, a hot spring and spa resort, an adventure park and an amusement park. Come December, it’ll be joined by Movie Animation Park Studios, Asia’s first animation theme park.
