Thailand Creative and Design Center (TCDC) and other libraries face closure, according to founding architect Duangrit Bunnag.

Just as we were getting excited about Thailand Creative and Design Center's (TCDC) move from Emporium shopping mall to the old Post Office on Charoenkrung Road, the future of this much-loved design library now looks to be in jeopardy.

According to a status posted on Facebook by one of its founders, architect Duangrit Bunnag, the military junta is looking to close TCDC along with Knowledge Management and Development (OKMD), which oversees TCDC as well as other active libraries including TK Park and Museum Siam.

"It's confirmed. The junta will propose to the cabinet tomorrow to dissolve TCDC and OKMD, the public organization that oversees TCDC. Let's count on someone in the cabinet who has vision to help us."

According to the revered Thai starchitect, the proposal to close the organizations is scheduled for cabinet review tomorrow (Tue Nov 10). Online, the news has already gone viral, with over 5,000 shares on Facebook alone and countless more on Twitter.

Most comments are harshly critical of the revelation.  "Goodbye creativity and imagination," said one commentator. "It's no more than I expect," said another. "I'm surprised it has stood strong until today. This is such a pity. They don't see it's value."

We reached out to TCDC's director, Apisit Laistrooglai, who declined to comment at this time. Chaiyong R. Angkura, the chairman of TCDC, could not be reached for comment.

Although nothing is official at this stage, the design library's Facebook page reiterated Duangrit's statement. Other sources said that an official announcement will be made shortly.

"News is circulating that the need for our public organization is up for consideration by the Office of the Public Sector Development Commission (OPDC). We would like to inform you that TCDC has been notified of this information but does not have details yet. If there is any news, we will update you soon."

The TCDC was established in 2004 under the Thaksin Sinawatra government as a way to grow the country's creative economy. "We were lucky at that time," said Duangrit in 2010. "It was a time when people were very stuck on how to move the economy onto the next level, and we came up with the idea—me and a group of other designers—that design can be the future for the whole economy."

Today, TCDC serves as an exhibition space and resource center with over 32,000 volumes of design publications.
