It's very hard for relief efforts to get into Nepal right now. I was living in Phuket when the Tsunami hit, and for the first couple weeks, locals were definitely more effective at providing relief than organizations that had no foothold in the island. The followings NGOs are all present in Nepal right now, and have been present since before the earthquake struck on April 25, 2015.

The organization: Save the Children

The quote: "We’re just gearing up,” said Roger Hodgson, deputy country director in Nepal for Save the Children, an international charity that already has more than 400 people, mostly Nepali, in the country. “People have been resilient. But it’s been difficult to get people and supplies into the country, especially to rural areas far from Katmandu.” -- New York Times.

"Carroll said that a response team of 24-emergency specialists, including a medical team, had been dispatched to assess humanitarian needs. He specifically emphasized the importance of distributing clean drinking water to prevent water-borne diseases in a country that already had low sanitation standards. They are also distributing hats and blankets for babies, as many families are living on the streets because of the fear of aftershocks" -- Time Magazine

The organization: Habitat for Humanity Nepal

The quote: "Habitat for Humanity International, which has worked in Nepal for years, said it would immediately begin distributing 20,000 emergency shelter kits as it evaluates the scope of the damage and determines construction plans" -- New York Times

The organization: dZi

The quote: "Since its inception in Nepal in 1998, dZi (pronounced Z) Foundation has made impressive contributions, building 18 new schools, 20 clean drinking water systems, almost 3,000 sanitary toilets, 17 community buildings, 10 bridges and currently has two health post buildings under construction. Community involvement has been key to the non-profit’s development model. The staff other than Ayers are Nepalese." -- iNews Network

The organization: World Vision

The quote: "World Vision aims to assist 100,000 people across Nepal in the initial emergency response. Distributions of tarpaulins and blankets started two days after the earthquake and the most immediate needs are expected to be water, food, household supplies, temporary shelter and protection for children." -- The Guardian
