From 1901 to 2000, a trip into the past with the sky-high Waldorf.

One of BK’s picks for top 10 hotel bars, Waldorf Astoria’s art deco bar, The Loft, has just introduced a brand new cocktail menu inspired by cultural landmarks and inventions spanning the 20th century.

The Loft is found atop the Waldorf Astoria, and has been quick to make a name for itself among cocktail lovers and have been keen on sticking to their themes, such as the art-inspired cocktails launched last year.

Bar manager Song Terbsiri takes his experience from Hilton Hotel Adelaide, Renaissance, and Capella to this new series.

We start light and sweet with Red Velvet (B620), a cake that Waldorf Astoria helped popularize in New York. The glass is coated with white chocolate and will have you go through a thin layer of buttery cream before getting to the luxurious red velvet syrup. They also have strawberry chocolate shavings for that extra pop of color.

Jumping to the strongest pick of the bunch, there’s the Moon Rock (B480), which celebrates the successful landing of Apollo 11 on the moon.

The notes are similar to an old fashioned but easier to drink due to the cranberry juice and orange bitters. They also coat the orb ice cube in cacao butter which gradually adds sweetness when it melts.

Come out of your comfort zone and go for the Grand Prix (B520) mixing a mezcal base with peach and mango, or try the Pizzeria (B520) in honor of pizza margherita.

Apart from the cocktails, the bar added three new food items including the lobster roll tucked in a bite size hotdog bun and topped with caviar; a platter of tender BBQ corn fried chicken tenders with a side of homemade dipping reminiscent of Thai jaew and sweet chili sauce; and a crunchy fried calamari and baby octopus plating with a drizzle of lemon to go with the spice infused batter.

Waldorf Astoria Bangkok, 151 Ratchadamri Rd, 02-846-8851. Open Sun-Thurs 5pm-midnight; Fri-Sat 5pm-late.
