Why living outside of Bangkok’s core gets better every year
Living away from the "action" definitely has its upside
Every fall in love with the sleek, floor-to-ceiling windows, spacious floor plans and modern, mid-century furniture of a CDB condo before nearly dropping dead from the sight of its 50k/month price tag? A lot of those luxuries are much more attainable mere minutes outside the city core—Bang Na, Ladprao, Dok Mai, etc. Everything is a cut below the big-city average, too. Want to dash out for cocktails and bites? It all gets cheaper once you escape the enclaves of Thonglor, Ekkamai and Sathorn-Silom.
Living outside Bangkok’s bustling city centers doesn’t mean that you can’t head into town. Most decent property developments on the fringe are relatively close to thoroughfares that lead right to the action. Most major BTS stations are just a short cab ride away. Speaking of BTS lines, the Purple Line has already opened up Bangyai and Nonthaburi, with the SRT Dark Red Line set to open in 2019—connecting to the BTS, MRT and ARL—with the Orange Line just behind it. The city is about to open up in a huge way.
Some of the city’s best night markets are located outside of the CBD and directly in some of the more liveable neighborhoods outside the core. The Rod Fai Night Market is one of the city’s best outdoor bazars, boasting vintage knick-knacks, artisanal crafts, homeware and trendy clothing. Live in an area like Bang Na or Dok Mai and this is just a stone’s throw away. The food? Yeah, markets like this are packed with vendors from across Bangkok. There are also other staples like JJ Market (Chatuchak), Amulet Market and Sampeng Market.
Yes, you commute to work you'll still need to deal with hell traffic, and yes, much of that traffic is caused by folks from outside the core rushing in all at once. Anyone who works in Sathorn or Asok probably shutters at the idea of owning a car. Outside the city center, driving becomes a lot more tolerable—even enjoyable. You can dash around to local hotspots without falling asleep behind the wheel, and zipping out of town for weekend getaways gives you a jump on all the folks from the inner city headed to Rayong, Pattaya and Hua Hin. Owning a car is the best way to explore Bangkok's lesser-known gems, but the experience is only worth it if you live outside the core.
Forget the over saturated Lumpini park packed with creepy monitor lizards and opt for nice parks outside Bangkok’s heart like King Rama 9 Park near Bang Na and Dok Mai or Anusawari park in Bang Khen. King Rama XI Park features one of the largest botanical gardens in Thailand, along with a big lake to enjoy rowing and sailing. The slender Seri Thai Park in near Bang Kapi and Hua Mak is perfect for yoga, tai chi or basketball. If exercise is not your cup of tea, try going to Srinakarin night market packed with bars and reasonably priced eats.
Want to swing a few clubs at the driving range? The further you move outside the city the better the driving ranges get (many of which offer rates around B300/5 golf ball trays, making for a very reasonable way to sharpen your game). Check out Thana City Gold Club (100-100/1 Moo 4, Bangna-Trad Rd., 02-172-2300) Summit Windmill Golf Club (72 Moo 14 Bangna-Trad Rd., 02-750-2112), which are both within reach. Feel like getting in the water? Head up to Nongbon Water Sports (Nong Bon, Prawet, 02 328 0236) for sailing and windsurfing, or Taco Lake (175/1 Moo 12, Bangna-trad Rd., 02 316 7809) for wakeboarding, knee boarding and water skiing lessons with professional teachers.
