Want a BMX park under a flyover? Tell the government
The Singapore Land Authority has big plans for the island's viaducts, starting with an awesome dance party later this month.
You guys, the government is getting really hip. This time, they want to turn the space under Singapore's above-ground train tracks, flyovers and other viaducts into recreational hotspots.
In addition to that relatively new futsal park underneath Thomson flyover, there's something else exciting happening later this month. The National Arts Council is turning the viaduct at 369 Commonwealth Avenue into a cool arts space for Off the Rails a late-afternoon street art jam on May 24, with music by Attagirl, DJ Reiki and wonderully energetic New Stream Brass Band.
A Singapore Land Authority spokesperson told us, "We have plans to make available more viaduct land sites for open tender when they are approved for interim use." They also "will explore installing basic amenities like water and electricity" at these sites.
Most excitingly, you get a say. The SLA is accepting ideas from the public their official site until May 30 for what to do with other spaces.
We nosed around the SLA Facebook page, and so far, the most popular request has been for BMX pump parks to replace the one at the now-closed Tampines Bike Park. We also liked "a self sustainable solar powered community greenhouse to grow vegetables and plants", but were baffled by "a funeral home and mortuary".
If you have a better idea, speak now.
