You know what a skywalk is, right? It’s that thing we use to get from Chidlom BTS to CentralWorld without having to go near smelly street stalls or the dirty, potholed pavements. Well, if the BMA’s new B15 billion plan comes to fruition, we might never have to walk on the ground again. They are planning a network of elevated walkways or as they like to call it a “super skywalk system,” that will stretch a massive 50km around the city. The project is split into two phases with the first phase, starting next month, focusing on constructing a new walkway down pretty much the length of Sukhumvit Road, starting at Soi Nana and ending at Soi Bearing. The second wave of construction covers 32km of elevated pavement in Ratchadamri, Silom, Sathorn, Phetchaburi, Ramkhamhaeng, Ekkamai, Thong Lor, Phaholyothin, Thon Buri and the Bang Wa areas. Just imagine, as this entire network is covered from the elements and protected by CCTV and security, we’ll never have to worry about skin whitener, umbrellas or buskers (or actually living in a city with soul) ever again.
