Ten century-old rain trees are under threat. Located on a plot on Soi 31, they are due to be uprooted to make way for a development project. The plot’s owner claims they will not be destroyed, but have been sold to be replanted in a privately-owned plot. There has been a ground swell of opposition over their relocation, though, and demands for them to be donated or sold to the municipality. Started by the Big Trees Project (which now counts more than 2,600 members), the efforts have now been supported by the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority (BMA). The BMA would also cover the costs of relocating the trees to publicly-owned land. The Big Trees Project is also pushing for legislation that would force landowners to consult with the city every time they plan to cut or move a big tree.
