Savvy readers may have noticed breaking news in the Bangkok mediascape yesterday. Yes, it’s official: BK Magazine is now a proud member of the Coconuts Media family tree, as all of Asia City Media Group’s Thailand assets have been acquired by the alternative news media brand.

But wait: what does that mean?

In short, Coconuts Media has acquired:

• BK Magazine. You know, the thing you’re currently reading. Bangkok’s leading food and lifestyle magazine has been printing and publishing since 2001, and it remains the go-to for F&B news, irreverent hot takes, and the occasional deep dive into the issues gripping Thailand today.

• Soimilk, the fast-growing fashion and lifestyle online publication for Gen Z and millennials. I.e., the Thai-language jam to our English-language toast.

• Top Tables, BK Magazine’s annual list of the top 100 restaurants in Bangkok, including its supporting print guide and awards show. Here’s a link to that page.

• BK Restaurant Week, the annual Bangkok restaurant booking promotion. That’s happening now.

Asia City Studio, the in-house content and creative agency working with brands such as Citibank, the Central Group, and Kiatnakin Bank.

• Top Spots Thailand, the online travel guide produced by BK Magazine.

What that really means is, effective immediately, Coconuts will manage the ongoing publication and operation of these brands. BK will still be BK. Soimilk will still be Soimilk. We’re just under new management. This is an exciting move for everyone involved, as echoed by Coconuts Media founder and CEO Byron Perry.

“I am excited to join forces and take advantage of the very real synergies between Asia City and Coconuts. Asia City has a strong Thailand sales team, beloved media brands in BK Magazine and Soimik, and strength in print and events. This will complement the larger and more regional digital audience of Coconuts, as well as our premium video production skills,” said Perry.

“The acquisition by Coconuts will accelerate the transition of Asia City brands in the digital media space,” said Greg Duncan, CEO of Asia City Media Group. “It’s a great strategic fit in terms of content, reach and skill-set, and provides new opportunities for our well-loved and well-established brands to grow.”

Fans of BK should note that Coconuts will continue publishing the bi-weekly print run BK Magazine, which is distributed to 400 venues across Bangkok and has continued unabated for nearly 20 years.

Advertisers will now be able to buy branded content and display ad campaigns targeting the combined audience of Coconuts Media websites, which now total 2 million unique visitors per month on average—1.5 million to coconuts.co, 220,000 to bkmagazine.com, and 290,000 to soimilk.com. Coconuts Media also plans on selling 360-degree campaigns across digital, print, video, and events.
