New Floodway
Deputy Prime Minister Kittiratt Na-Ranong announced plans for a new floodway running along easten Bangkok and its budget of B350 billion baht. The minister said that although details of the plan have been finalized, they cannot be announced before building “public understanding.” In other words, residents living along the floodway are not going to be happy about it. Democrats, too, are upset. The plan relies on emergency decrees that allowed it to escape parliamentary scrutiny. Democrats Korn Kittiratt and Abhisit Vejjajiva argue that the project will take 2-4 years to complete and that there’s plenty of time to follow regular procedures. At this point though, only a court ruling declaring the decrees unconstitutional could stop the project.
