New Chatuchak Management
On Jan 2, the State Railway of Thailand took over management of the Chatuchak Weekend Market from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration. This could be good news for tenants as the SRT seems to want more transparency in its rents, which will vary according to four zones in the market. According to current tenants at Chatuchak, the rents under the BMA management were low but had been snatched up by middle-men who charged extortionate amounts to actual tenants. Democrats are arguing for JJ to stay in Governor Sukhumbhand’s hands, saying that the SRT did a poor job of managing the pets market next to Chatuchak and that the BMA are much more professional. Either way, the situation is tense enough that the SRT has asked for extra police at the weekend market during the two-month transition period. Tenants will also get to stay for free during that period—use that as a bargaining chip next time you’re there!
