Blame it on the upcoming gubernatorial elections, but the BMA seems to be going into overdrive when it comes to tackling traffic. Plan number one was recently announced by Governor Sukhumbhand. It is a revamp of the Victory Monument intersection: new toilets, more cameras, 33 new “vertical gardens” (you know, those plants growing on walls or BTS pillars), new street lights and new booths for the boys in brown. Not sure how any of this can ease traffic? Neither are we. But wait, there’s more. Department of Public Works and Town and Country Planning committee member Preecha Ronnarong announced that Bangkok will get a bunch of satellite mini cities with their own high-rise projects and mass-transit lines to be launched in Bang Na, Bang Khen, Ram-Indra, Min Buri and Taling Chan districts. Urban sprawl’s done wonders for Los Angeles, so we can only applaud this genius idea. Cops are going to join the war against traffic, too, by installing Wi-Fi in their police booths. They say the increased connectivity will help them better coordinate traffic. (We say the more time they spend checking their Facebook the better.) Finally, Deputy Transport Minister General Prin Suwannatat promised expressways would get additional toll collectors to its booths to reduce queues at rush hour.
