Latest Single-Ticket Mass-Transit Plan
Transport Minister Sukumpol Suwanatat has once again renewed Pheu Thai’s commitment to a flat B20 ticket for the BTS. But he’s also included the MRT in this fresh promise, saying we’ll be able to use a single ticket on both systems by 2015. Skeptics point out that as long as the BMA is run by Democrats, it’ll be difficult for the government to achieve this. This announcement was accompanied by the usual litany of new railway lines in Bangkok (an extra 410km by 2019) and high-speed rail links across the country. Now they just need B397 billion for construction of said mass-transit lines and China’s help for the high-speed train, for which we’d like to barter. How many kilos of rice is it going to take to get a bullet train to Nong Khai? The minister didn’t say.
