The Indian Heritage Centre opens this Friday
And it’s celebrating with a month-long CultureFest that includes street carnivals, food fairs, dance performances and outdoor film screenings.
The heart of Little India is now home to the dramatic- and contemporary-looking Indian Heritage Center (IHC) and it'll be throwing open its door this Friday (May 8) with a month-long culture festival showcasing Indian art forms.
Happening from May 8-31, there are dance and theater performances, outdoor screenings, workshops and even a street carnival. Highlights include an outdoor gig (May 23) by homegrown Indian fusion band Divine Sutra, a food fair (May 29-31) with Indian bites like dhokla and panipuri, as well as a martial arts demonstration (May 23) on techniques that date back 5,000 years. Head here for a full lineup of events.
As for the building itself, the four-story structure takes cues from the Baoli (an Indian stepped wall) and comes with five permanent galleries with different themes. Arranged chronologically, the galleries detail the history of South and Southeast Asia between the 1st century CE and the present day to trace the roots of early Indians in Singapore and Malaya. Artifacts aside, there are interactive displays and also a special space dedicated to temporary exhibitions.
We also hear that there are plans for monthly outdoor performances, workshops and tours, as well as a Little India Heritage Trail that takes you through the landmarks and history of the area.
Plus, the museum has free entry for Singaporeans and PRs.
