Here is an inside look at the swanky new hotel to take over Mahanakhon
The phrase “like a movie” gets thrown around a lot but look at this place
After launching a successful beachfront property in Hua Hin, American boutique hotel brand The Standard is keeping the pedal on the metal and opening another property in Thailand, this time inside the previously vacant hotel slot on the bottom third of King Power Mahanakhon in the heart of Sathorn-Silom.
The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon — officially opening in May 2022 — will be the brand’s flagship property in Asia, and based on the images of the interior looks to hold up to the glistening skyscraper’s image as an icon of luxury in Bangkok’s crowded skyline.
The property is designed through a collaboration between The Standard’s award-winning in-house design team and prestigious Spanish artist-designer Jaime Hayon, who was recognized by Wallpaper magazine as one of the top 100 most influential creatives of the past decade. Sticking with the other somewhat art-deco-themed properties in the brand’s portfolio, the interior of The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon highlights vibrant colors, flowing curved shapes, art installations and lush greenery to create an unquestionably unique-looking hotel among a market that is saturated with them. Walking into the hotel foyer, guests are greeted with muted green tones and lush plants alongside light brown wicker decorations to create a serene sense of nature among the bustling city center outside.
The hotel’s 155 rooms range from 40-sqm for a “Standard King” all the way up to the gargantuan 144-sqm “Bigger Penthouse” that takes up an entire corner of the building and is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows that beam natural light into the living areas. All types of accommodations are well equipped with basic amenities such as Bang & Olufsen Bluetooth speakers, a Nespresso machine, minibar, table and sofa set to lounge, work or eat along with free Wi-Fi. The guests can also enjoy a different perspective of a beautiful city view through their own room’s floor-to-ceiling windows.
As with tradition, the pool marks of the hotel’s highlight features — a well-known tradition of The Standard brand. Sitting on an elevated perch on the building’s west side, the space overlooks Silom Road towards the river and is enclosed in tall palm trees and other lush greenery to provide shade. In all, about 57 people can hang here comfortably between the pool and accompanying bar, which serves small bites, craft cocktails and plant-based refreshments to nibble and sip while swimming, sunbathing or indulging in city scenery.
There are also a lot of options on the dining and drinking front inside the larger hotel space. The Standard Grill, its all-day dining spot, blends American steakhouse favorites with regional Thai flavors. Then there is Mott 32, which offers various Cantonese-style dishes with a few twists (think dim sum, apple-wood-roasted Peking duck and barbecue honey glazed Iberico pork). Tease, the hotel’s curated tearoom, features probably the most attention-grabbing interior of the lot with floor-to-ceiling black-and-white patterns swooping and zigging across the entire room like an optical illusion. Here, expect American-style snacks along with a curated selection of teas from across the globe.
Furthermore, The Parlor is the hotel’s casual social hub, meant to be a place to kick back with a book, nice coffee or cocktail, and chat with friends. The green vibe here somewhat matches the foyer of the hotel, and nails the comforting colors that you want in a laidback space — there is a rotating crew of live music acts to boot. Ojo Bangkok, with its glamorous space-age golden decor, sits near the absolute top of the building on the 76th floor and, in a twist for flagship restaurants in Bangkok hotels, focuses on Mexican cuisine and cocktails. Lastly is Sky Beach, the resident rooftop bar that is, by nature of the building it's located in, the highest al-fresco cocktail bar in town.
The Standard, Bangkok Mahanakhon is now open for reservations, and has a pre-opening offer of 25-percent off discount, including breakfast for up to two people. The offer is available until July 31 for stays until Feb 28, 2023. Bookings can only be made at standardhotels.com.
