Car-Free Sundays return this weekend with even more activities than before
Heritage tours, bike tours, lots of food and no cars.
There are so many reasons we’re excited that the Car-Free Sundays initiative is making a comeback after a brief hiatus, besides the environmental ones. A six-month pilot took place from February to July this year on the last Sunday of everything month, with road closures in the CBD and Civic District. It was deemed a success and will return this Sunday with the addition of the entire Telok Ayer area for more activities.
This new edition will be more inclusive, appealing to the young, elderly and differently-abled too. Over at Telok Ayer, start the day off with some breakfast at the rows and rows of eateries on McCallum Street, Amoy Street, Boon Tat Street, Telok Ayer Street and Stanley Street. Then join in a free-guided tour of Singapore’s oldest and most important temple for immigrants from southern China’s Fujian province, hosted by volunteers from the Hokkien Huay Kuan, or go on the Pioneer Trail at Ann Siang Hill and Telok Ayer Green to learn about the trades and lives of Singapore’s early immigrants.
Head down to the Civic District, where anyone and everyone can take free rides on the “bike train”, a concept drummed up by a Bishan resident that sees a couple of bicycles connected in a train-like trail. If you’re bringing your bike around, there’ll also be community cycling groups who’ll bring you to a whole bunch of places within the area to learn about its historical value. The Fullerton Heritage will also be opened for one-hour tours (includes a Heritage Local Breakfast set) that will bring you on a journey of Singapore’s transformation from a colonial outpost to what it is today.
