This Jan 23-31 sees the return of Bukruk Urban Arts Festival, a 10-day project of public wall paintings, art exhibitions, artist talks, animated film screenings and an open-air music festival. This year's event, sponsored by European Union as part of a program to promote culture connection between EU countries and Asia, focuses on the bizarre and uncanny. Here's what's in store.

 

Jan 23 – Music Festival

Two stages of live music from an eclectic lineup that so far includes local bands Apartment Khunpa, Yellow Fang, Paradise Bangkok Molam Band, Gym & Swim, and more. They'll be joined by international acts such as El Guincho (Spain, watch the video above), Alek Et Les Japonaises (Belgium), Dye (France, La Fine Equipe (France) and DJ Marine Caillat (France).

Jan 24-29 – Wall Art

Arguably the highlight of the festival, at which visitors will witness some of the world's most famous street artists light up the walls of Chinatown with massive pieces. Expect artwork from Aitch (Romania), Aryz (Spain), Fikos (Greece), Nychos (Austria), Motomichi Nakamura (Japan), Daan Botlek (Netherlands), Escif (Spain), Kult (Thailand), Roa (Belgium) and Daehyun Kim (Korea),  to name a few.

Jan 26-Feb 20 - Art Exhibitions

The works of artsts Daen Sudsakon, Florence Lucas, Lolay, Roa, Aitch, Fikos, Saddo, Motomichi Nakamura, Daehyun Kim, Daen Sudsakon and Le Dernier Cri will be showcased at some of the best art galleries and art spaces in Bangkok for their own individual exhibitions.

Jan 29 – Workshops

For a more hands-on experience, join artist Panop Koonwat for a workshop detailing all the basic principles of animation creation using Adobe After Effect. Participants will produce their own short animation video to take home.

Jan 30 – Animation Night

A collaboration night with the French Panam Anim festival by Pascal Chinarro, inviting international animation schools to share their creations each year. Curator Flokim Lucas, along with Pascal Chinarro, have selected of these wining 16 short films to be screened for a special animation night. The second part of the evening sees a special screening of the 1973 stop motion science fiction film 'Fantastic Planet'.

Jan 31 – Artist Talks 

An afternoon of artist talks from Martha Cooper, Motomichi Nakamura, Florence Lucas and The Archivist, who will be answering questions and sharing stories from their own artistic journeys.

Jan 31 – Closing Ceremony

To celebrate the end of a great festival, Motomichi presents a projection mapping piece with a sound design installation by the French musician Jean David Caillouet, followed by music from DJs Marine caillat (France) and Sun Glitters (Luxembourg).
