Breast cancer is the number one cause of cancer deaths in Thai women, and has been dubbed the “silent killer” because it often goes undetected until it’s too late. In 2012 alone, Thailand had 13,184 new cases of breast cancer that resulted in 4,665 deaths—which means roughly one death every two hours. But with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration offering breast cancer screenings and diagnostic services, all women—especially those who may feel they are at risk—can get tested for the disease free of charge. If caught early, treatment is usually very successful. There are nine participating hospitals, including Taksin, Ladkrabang and Sirindhorn Hospitals, and the free services will be available Aug 9-23. Participants can also be vaccinated for cervical cancer, the second most deadly form of cancer in Thailand, and HPV at discounted prices.
