Commercial real estate company JLL has just announced that the land which currently houses the Australian Embassy is up for grabs, now that the embassy is preparing to move to a new home near Lumphini Park.

Stretching 3,182 square wah the space sits on South Sathorn road at the heart of Bangkok's financial district.

Currently the land in this area is priced at approximately B2 million per square wah, making the total embassy worth in the region of B6 billion. However, JLL have not placed a set price for the land and are open to expression of interest. The offer will close in June.

In related news, the British Embassy on Wireless Road was sold to Central Group back in February for a similar price at B2.2 million baht per square wah. The total 10,000-square-wah area became the highest land deal in Thai history when it sold for B20 billion.

Designed by Australian architect Ken Woolley (who was awarded the highest architectural honour in Australia when he received the RAIA Gold Medal in 1993), the embassy's shimmering natural-yellow tiles and pure lines have been a Sathorn landmark since 1979.

The building follows in a long string of Bangkok modernist icons which have failed to receive any architectural protection. Most recently, it was announced that the Dusit Thani hotel on the corner of Silom and Rama 4 roads would be demolished to make way for a new shopping center and hotel.
