In an effort to reduce traffic gridlock, Bangkok police have just announced the suspension of road checkpoints during the day. That’s not to say that clamping down on drunk driving and other traffic violations isn’t still their highest priority—it’s just that the serious crime-fighting can wait until after 9pm, when it’s a bit cooler and the cops don’t have to worry about tan lines. But before you decide to go on a daytime road rampage be warned that police and volunteers will be employing cutting-edge camera technology to record you in the act. Rumors that this is simply so they can sell the footage to dodgy satellite police-camera-action shows is of course unfounded, but just in case, don’t forget to smile for the camera when you shoot that red light.
