All matches at 6pm unless stated otherwise.

The big match in the capital this weekend is in the League Cup. An intriguing quarter-final second-leg is in store as Muangthong welcome Chonburi to the Yamaha Stadium. Chonburi lead 3-2 from the first leg, so the tie is very much in the balance. The victors will meet Buriram PEA in the semis. Take an umbrella and get along to the stadium if you can: Muangthong at home to Chonburi is always a special occasion.

Yet more bad publicity for FAT president Worawi Makudi. This year alone, Worawi has had to answer questions (although he typically filed lawsuits rather than actually answering the questions) about: a hugely controversial FAT presidential election; accusations that he demanded the TV rights for a proposed Thailand v England friendly match; and, that he was with Mohamed Bin Hammam in Trinidad when the former AFC chief took cash bribes (which led to Bin Hammam being banned for life by FIFA).

No TPL games this weekend of course, but there are two Division 1 fixtures and both involve Bangkok clubs. Bangkok United are away at Chantaburi in a match which is crucial for United’s play-off chances (Sunday, 4pm). BU have fallen away from the promotion places since the mid-season break, but three points in Chantaburi would breathe life back into their chances of playing in the TPL next season. In the other match, Thai Honda make the long journey to Chiang Mai (Sunday, 6pm).

Thai fans will be biting their nails in nervous anticipation as the Elephants face their first major tests since German coach Winnie Schafer took over the national team. Two 2014 World Cup Qualifiers are to be played on Friday and Tuesday as the AFC group stages get underway. Thailand’s reward for squeezing through the previous knockout round against Palestine was to be drawn in a very tough group alongside Oman, Saudi Arabia and Australia.

Just a solitary fixture in the top two divisions this weekend as the national team continues its preparations for the World Cup Qualification double header against Australia and Oman. Happily enough, that sole fixture takes place in the capital as BEC Tero Sasana host TTM Phichit at the Thephasadin Stadium at 6pm on Saturday. Tero will move back into the top six if they win.

As the TPL disappears off the radar again, the spotlight turns to the national team. Winnie Schaefer’s men are busy preparing for their first two group stage World Cup Qualifiers against Australia and Oman, and on Wednesday night at the Rajamangala Stadium the national team played out a 0-0 draw with regional rivals Singapore. Schaefer had stated that he was intending to use the match to look at fringe players and duly rested some first-teamers.

Army United won the sole FA Cup match to take place in midweek when they overcame Buriram FC 2-1 at the Army Stadium. Leandro and Sarawut Thongsawad were on the scoresheet for Army who will meet Chonburi in the next round. They will also be relieved at getting a win under their belts after a terrible run of league results.
