5 reasons why you absolutely need to be at Goodman Arts Centre this Saturday
Including a speed-dating style meet-the-artists sesh
While we do enjoy a good film, theater production and music gig just as much as the next person, we can’t hide our natural propensity for excitement whenever we hear of a block party; especially one that houses all those activities that under one roof. So when the good peeps over at Goodman Arts Centre, Singapore’s biggest artist enclave, announced their second Goodman: B-Sides showcase happening on Nov 17, we heaved a huge sigh of relief (after more than a month-long dry spell of block parties)
Inspired by the spirit of classic vinyl B-sides, the block party and arts event will see more than 15 artists who will present a myriad of works and workshops across film, music, visual art and theater from 4-10pm, all for free. And yes, there’ll be food and drinks to be had too: free ice cream for the first 600 patrons, beers, nachos, a myriad of BBQ grub like meatball skewers and grilled tiger prawns and more.
You know how there’s the saying, “If you never try, you’ll never know”? Whether you’re a pro at using your hands to make pretty things or are completely clueless, there’s a bunch of workshops you can sign up for. Goodman Ceramic Studio is hosting a Christmas Ornament Making Workshop for those early birds who have already begun the frantic task of planning Christmas. Make your own unique fused glass ornament for yourself or a loved one.
Otherwise, you can join resident artist Sujak Rahman over at Block B as he teaches the basic techniques of making your own “shibori” (a Japanese term for tied and bound resist dyeing techniques) pattern on different fabrics.
We’ve had a pretty good run of theater productions, both local and international, this year. And we all know just how much hard work and rehearsals go into making a successful (and highly enjoyable one). But have you ever wondered what it’s like for actors and directors to bring a script to life on stage?
Joint Artistic Director Claire Wong and Associate Artist Lucas Ho – both from Checkpoint Theatre – are holding very special 45-minute studio sessions, where participants will be given roles from one of their plays to read under their guidance.
For just one day, visit some of the artist studios at Block B where you can see where the magic happens. You’ll get to see their artwork, meet the artist and ask all the questions you’ve been dying to ask, whether art-related or not (because we’re all humans looking to connect with other humans, right?).
Otherwise, head over to La Barca Ristorante & Wine Bar, where a bunch of arts practitioners based in Goodman Arts Centre will be hosting tables of up to three people every 15 minutes for an hour for a quick chat a la speed dating. Find out more about the artists beyond their artistry.
There’s limited capacity for both, so sign up while you still can.
A series of 15 short films that tells stories of Singaporeans between the ‘70s and ‘90s will be screened at the multi-purpose room throughout the day. It’s a huge project under the SG Cares movement that was made possible thanks to 15 local filmmakers, National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre and film company Blue3Asia.
See the story of prominent Singaporean social worker Teresa Hsu and how she earned the title “Singapore’s Mother Teresa” in One At A Time; a moving film that touches on autism in Singapore through the eyes of two Primary 2 boys in Jason Lee’s The Buddy; and more at one of the three 90-minute screenings.
So while you’re feeding yourself with the arts, take some time to catch a choir performance by the Singapore Lyric Opera Children’s Choir (SLOCC), tap your feet to a series of love songs by the Philharmonic Brass Quintet or explore Malay music and dance by Era Dance Theatre (EDT).
Otherwise, Eatmepoptart’s KiDG will be rockin’ out the amphitheater with his eclectic mix of vintage Asian pop, soul, funk, disco and other nifty tunes from the ‘60s to ‘80s to open and close the block party.
Goodman: B-Sides will take place at Goodman Arts Centre on Nov 17 from 4-10pm. Admission is free. Goodman Arts Centre is managed by Arts House Limited.
