6 reasons to go to Jurong this weekend
From trampolines to dim sum to potlucks
Replicating the famous district in Hong Kong (seizure-inducing neon signs included), Jurong Point's super kitsch themed zone Mongkok is a good way to load up on all your HK favorites. We're sort of indifferent to the fanfare and the four-man cycle tour, but there is also a wide selection of tasty treats, from the essential milk tea to the delectable roast meats; and of course, dim sum.
Equally kitschy, the newly renovated Japanese food street Shokutsu Ten does a selection of restaurants, cultural kiosks and “street vendors”. Styled after Tokyo and Osaka, it’s like a weekend in Japan (sorta, not really) without the hassle of getting on a plane (you will have to take the MRT though). There is a Japanese market, a bakery and vendors selling everything from sushi to karaage. We suggest you start in the late afternoon and shop and eat your way through to dinner.
Amped may have been the first but now, ZOOM is the largest trampoline park in Singapore. You can get the free and easy half-hour package or you can join one of the beginner classes and learn how to catch some “mad air” on the trampoline (it’s a lot trickier than it looks). There are also foam pits, airbags and slam dunk lanes. Our pick has to be the dodge ball game; go with a group for maximum silliness, though.
Kind of like IKEA, Courts and Giant all rolled into one, the brand new, three-story shopping warehouse Big Box stocks massive shelves of everything from groceries to clothes to furniture or even new tires for your ride. Warehouse Mart has household items, Style Box does clothes and Living Box sells furniture. It's all pretty affordable, too.
If you are aching from the shopping (or the jumping), you can always get a massage at Masego. This new-ish safari themed spa at Safra Jurong does treatments like deep tissue massages, Amazon milk baths and boreh wraps...in actual canopy tents.
Local bookbinding shop The Thistle Bindery is celebrating its third anniversary with a marbling and potluck party. Remember to bring your favorite home cooked dish and stay for the potluck afterwards. Note that the event is only open to participants from their previous workshops.
