With the TPL more popular than ever here’s a dummy’s guide to picking the Bangkok-based team that best suits you.

Singhtarua Football Club

Nickname: Singh jao tha (Port Lions)

Where: PAT Stadium (12,000), Klong Toei

First home game: Feb 23, 6pm, against PTT Rayong

Website: www.singhtaruafc.com

Good if you: are an expat English teacher or just really, really like rice whisky, with some good ol’ hooligan spirit thrown in.

Muangthong United

Nickname: Twin Qilin

Where: SCG Stadium (15,000), Pakkret, Nonthaburi

First home game: Feb 22, 6pm, against Chainat

Website: www.mtufc.com

Good if you: only follow cashed-up teams that win a lot. The owner Pae’s PR spin can be fun, too.

Bangkok Glass

Nickname: Glass Rabbit

Where: Leo Stadium (13,000), Khlong 3.

First home game: Mar 9, 6pm against Samut Songkrahm

Website: www.bangkokglassfc.com

Good if you: drink Leo, enjoy a stadium with only one-stand, fake grass and team name that’s derived from a glass company. Bonus: women wearing bunny costumes.

TOT Sport Club

Nickname: Hello

Where: TOT Stadium, Chaeng Watthana, Lak Si (5,439).

First home game: Mar 8, 6pm against Muangthong United

Website: www.totsc.com

Good if you: have a dodgy internet connection with slow customer service and want to make friends with insiders in the telecom business. Its vintage website, a big plus.

BEC Tero Sasana F.C.

Nickname: Dragon Fire

Where: Thephasadin Stadium (6,378) 154, Rama I Rd., Pathumwan

First home game: Mar 9, 6pm against Suphanburi

Website: www.becterosasana.com

Good if you: like to watch Channel 3, enjoy past-it celebrity players and living off past glories.

Bangkok United

Nickname: Bangkok Angels

Where: Thai-Japanese Stadium

First home game: Mar 8, 6pm against Sisaket

Website: www.bangkokunitedfc.com

Good if you: live near Din Daeng and you don’t particularly like crowds.

Army United FC

Nickname: Gentleman Ranger

Where: Royal Thai Army Stadium (20,000), Vibhavadi-Rangsit Rd. Din Daeng

First home game: Feb 23, 6pm, against Bangkok United

Website: www.armyufc.com

Good if you: like ogling young cadets (they're made to go to the first game) or students as the stadium is set in the heart of Thammasat University. Oh, and you’re happy to settle for mid-table mediocrity.

Police United Football Club

Nickname: The Silver Shields

Where: Thammasat Stadium, Pathumthani.

First home game: Mar 9, 6pm against Air Force Central

Website: www.pufc.co.th

Good if you: are a law-abiding citizen and think everyone should be rewarded for parking in an orderly fashion with pretties in very tight police uniforms on matchday.
