Last year, the Bangkok Post reported that roses in Thailand are the world’s most expensive in the world: “’The average price of a dozen roses in other countries is 3,000 baht, but the price in Thailand is about 4,000 baht,’ Rawat Chindapol, chief executive officer of Miss Lily Flower said.” For V-Day 2013, prices had gone up 10%, with florists blaming higher wages and fuel costs.
This year, the perfectly valid excuse for selling roses for as high as B600-800 a piece is the weather, which was unusually cold.
And it’s not just roses. Since Valentine’s Day happens to fall on Makha Bucha day (or is it the other way around?), lotus flower prices have skyrocketed, too. A bundle will cost you B100-150 as opposed to the regular B50-60 prices, the Thailand News Bureau reported.
MCOT reported that the Consumer Protection Board estimates rose prices at Pak Khlong Talat flower market shot up by a massive 600 percent and is so upset, they're going to take action to curb prices.
We checked a few online delivery services and it seems prices are actually on par with last year for your classic Valentine's dozen of roses. You are going to pay nearly B4,000 for 12 roses at your doorstep by Feb 14 both with
www.bangkokflowerstore.com and
www.bangkokflowerstore.com (both include a free teddy bear, too!). But you better order now if you want to get delivered in time: it’s already too late for delivery to the provinces but Bangkok is still possible.
