Centre for Contemporary Art opens in Gillman Barracks
The latest addition to arts hub Gillman Barracks will hold artist residencies, research programs and exhibitions.
More good news for the art scene, with the Nanyang Technological University's Centre for Contemporary Art (CCA) just opened yesterday.
Unlike the rest of the galleries, CCA will feature artist residencies from around the world, as well as hold regular seminars and research programs aimed at enhancing the local art scene. According to NTU's new strategy towards visual arts, the CCA is meant to be a fast developing hub for idea creation and debate in the arts and humanities. Beeing a bridge between different fields and pathways of knowledge, the arts represent a logical development for the university.
Professor Freddy Boey, Provost of the Nanyang Technological University says, " With a focus on research and production of knowledge, the center will fit into NTU’s larger mission to support research and innovation across disciplines and areas of inquiry. There is now a concept of “whole-brain engineering” being espoused in the US where engineers engage both their right and left brains."
The CCA is an impressive space--it was conceieved as an important component of the former military base, the biggest at the Barracks yet, and if its opending day's bustling talks and performances by artists Lee Wen and Jason Wee, as well as sound artists Bani Haykal and Mohamad Riduan were anything to go by, there'll be more good stuff coming out of the space.
