THAI Airways’ (www.thaiairways.com) new little sister Thai Smile (www.thaismileair.com) has just started operating daily direct flights from Bangkok’s Suvarnbhumi Airport to two domestic destinations, Krabi and Surat Thani, hot after launching a route to Macau. But with Thai Smile positioned as a mid-range alternative to THAI, we had hoped for more competitive fares. Flights between Bangkok and Surat Thani are B1,675-2,210 on Mon-Thu and B1,795-2,350 on Fri-Sun; and between Bangkok and Krabi are B1,750-2,315 on Mon-Thu and B1,857-2,460 on Fri-Sun, exclusive of airport taxes (B100 per trip). That’s not a whole lot different from THAI’s current domestic deals, which start at B2,410 for Surat Thani and B2,525 for Krabi. The offers of both airlines end Sep 30.
