Increased Fire Safety
It’s a sad irony that the Fico building fire, which fortunately did not lead to casualties, is doing more for fire safety regulations than the Santika blaze, which killed 66 people. Maybe because there are more policemen who own bars than office buildings? In any case, City Hall is to draft an ordinance to retrofit 1,000 buildings erected before the 1992 Building Safety Control Act with sprinklers. Of course, it’s not easy adding sprinklers to an old building, and building owners are asking City Hall to help finance the upgrades. Others argue it’s downright impossible and that fire detectors would be enough. A few days after the Fico blaze, the fatal fire at the Grand Mercure Park Avenue Hotel raised another question: how many existing sprinklers are properly positioned and actually work?
