From now until Jan. 5, 2020, ICONSIAM is hosting a handful of events to get you in the holiday spirit. One of the biggest going on right now is “Bangkok Illumination 2019”. The event takes over ICONSIAM’s riverfront promenade area with a bundle of Christmas decorations inspired by traditional Thai motifs. The show stopper is a massive, 22-meter-tall Christmas tree modeled after the majestic architecture of the Temple of the Dawn or Wat Arun and covered in Thai patterns. 

The event also includes one of the biggest water and light shows in Southeast Asia. Most of the promenade area is covered in a 400-meter stretch of light displays mixed with custom-built water fixtures that launch simultaneously every couple of hours. You can catch the show for free each day at 4:30pm, 6:30pm, 8pm and 9:30pm. 

Amazing Thailand Countdown 2020

ICONSIAM, a shopping mall known to put on a big show or two, is going into beast mode for New Years. On Dec 31, it will host a joint end-of-year bash with the Tourism Authority of Thailand called “Amazing Thailand Countdown 2020” with seven different marquee events to symbolize “seven wonders of blessings”. 

That might sound like a vague concept to grasp at first, but what it means for your celebration plans is basically one massive fireworks show along a 1,400-meter stretch of riverside at seven different locations. The fireworks themselves are actually made using sticky rice – an eco-friendly firework invention from Japan – so that's something new. 

ICONSIAM has reserved a special viewing area on it’s 7th floor to get the best angle of what might be the biggest fireworks show the city has seen in many years — they are expecting millions to see the show within a two-kilometer radius of the river. Each of the seven locations feature different firework designs, each one crafted to represent a different blessing, including wishes for the King’s long life, peace, Buddhism, wealth and harmony. 

There will be special transport to ICONSIAM for the event, provided by the Marine Department and Chao Phraya Express Boat, from various locations—starting at Saphan Thaksin pier is a safe bet. If you can’t make it to ICONSIAM, there are a bunch of other spots to view the show, like Charoenkrung Creative District, Lhong 1919, Asiatique The Riverfront, and basically every major hotel around that part of the riverside.
