5 must-eat dishes at Bangkok’s latest eco-themed food fest
Learn to help the world and stuff your face at the same time
A battle for better air quality has been raging in Bangkok since the early months of this year when news broke that the city had some of the worst air pollution in the world. Although that news seems to have fallen out of vogue, at least for now, the new eco-themed food fest Airy Ventures is planning to bring it back with the help of some of Bangkok’s best street food on Dec 17-21 from 4pm-11pm at Park Ventures Ecoplex—one of Bangkok’s most famous LEED-certified buildings in Ploenchit. The “eco” part of the event comes in the form of vendor booths and stage presentations meant to raise awareness about environmental issues.
Food wise, here’s what you can expect:
If you’re looking for a kebab with a twist, heading to PB Kebab’s stall is a good start. Their options range from succulent chicken kebabs (B80) to juicy beef kebabs (B100)—both are packed with their fiery hot sauce to keep things flavorful. You can always add some cheese (B30) to mellow down the flavor to pedestrian levels.
While there are bigger players in this field, this lesser-known salmon stall definitely competes. Their laab salmon (spicy salmon salad, B100) is MSG-free—replete with fresh, fatty salmon with some tangy lemon sauce. What distinguishes this from other mundane street salmon stalls is how they manually pound their spices, which helps to get rid of the unwanted smell.
No, you don’t get extra points if you can guess what this venue specializes in. There are tons of different kinds of gyozas to choose from: pan-fried or boiled, and stuffed with pork, prawns or veggies. If you’re one of those types who likes cheese on their gyoza, you’ll be happy with Kamol Gyoza’s virtually grease-free version—other gyoza stalls should take note.
Icy popsicles never go out of style in a place as hot as Bangkok, but all that sugar? No thanks. Here, Frozen Fruit has you covered with its popsicles made out of, you guessed it, frozen fruit. They literally look like pieces of fruit crammed together into a popsicle shape and they retain all of their pristine natural flavors without any added sugar.
Wander around Bangkok and you’re sure to see plenty of fluffy waffles stuffed with giant-sized sausages—it’s been a staple here for years. Dubbed as the ‘Waffdog’ (B249), Uncle Boss’ version of this hand food features organic, homemade German sausage and gooey raclette cheese. Aside from this, the venue also brings some of their unique waffledog creations to the event, like smoked ham duck breast and four-cheese sausage.
