About Eatery

With its phonebook-thick menu and chalkboards scrawled with notes on viniculture, aging processes and pairing tips, this rusticated wine bistro is as much about getting educated as it is about getting sozzled. Working only with organic, biodynamic and sustainable producers means rare tastes abound, as in the selection of “orange” wine, an ancient tradition that’s having a resurgence. There’s also plenty to eat with a cold-cuts counter and raw bar alongside tapas plates and more substantial dishes like spaghetti clams with garlic white wine pepper and parsley, or smoked organic Korat chicken served with chorizo crust and bacon potato terrine.

Akira Back

Akira Back’s eponymous restaurant on the 37th-floor of Marriott Marquis Queen’s Park is only the latest in the celebrity chef’s globetrotting conquest, with his brand represented in 10 cities around the world. The flavors of Back’s dishes, however, are more localized, layering Korean and Japanese cuisines with influences from his American upbringing. Share the AB tacos (crispy taco shells stuffed with Wagyu bulgogi marinated in sweet soy sauce) and tuna pizza (tuna sashimi on chips-like crust drizzled lightly with white truffle oil) to keep room for the grilled octopus in smoked jalapeno sauce and the absolutely necessary and wonderfully decadent chocolate souffle.

Appia

Through a menu that charts in-house rotisserie meats, unctuous stews, Mediterranean seafood and incredible homemade pastas, chef Paolo Vitaletti’s homestyle interpretation of Italian cuisine is as close as the city comes to true trattoria dining. Rarer, seasonal items come and go to complement the Roman family recipes, but what seemingly never changes is the restaurant’s mix of class and casual charm, only heightened by an excellent wine list.

Brasserie Cordonnier

Soho Hospitality (Above Eleven, Charcoal, Havana Social) moves into casual French dining. Previously in the kitchen at J’aime, chef Clement Hernandez rolls out French classics with his own touches, including the Australian wagyu beef tartare with confit egg yolk and porcini oil and lobster bisque with sweet corn and pickled baby corn. Group mixologist Davide Sambo completes the experience with French-inspired cocktails like La Vie En Rose (rose petal-infused Barcardi, yellow Chartreuse, lemon juice and rose essence).

Freebird

It takes some doing to woo Phrom Phong’s brunch crowd away from their beloved Quince, but chef Top Russell’s Aussie-leaning comfort food has done exactly that. Choose between the chi-chi dining room—all shiny surfaces, fluffy chandeliers and graffiti murals—or the hay bale-riddled garden to enjoy a rich, brothy seafood risotto, slow-cooked eggs with earthy local mushrooms, and some damn fine thick-cut fries.

Haoma

This modern two-storey wood house with backyard views is the brainchild of two Indian chefs, Deepanker Khosla and Tarun Bhatia, who are both zealots for the farm-to-table and zero-waste approach. Taste the edible house-grown greens through delicious beetroot puree roots with 90-day-heated black garlic and heirloom carrots. Meat-lovers can also order Thai-wagyu beef assisted by pickled cucumber and pearl onions.

Harvest

Crumbling walls, rickety old bicycles, rusting plant pots and bouquets of dried flowers setn the intensely rustic mood for Harvest’s homey European menu. Though heavy on the seafood, you’ll find hearty, meaty dishes as well, with highlights including the succulent Iberico pork steak on sweet braised fennel and 1.2kg cote de boeuf. No visit is complete without ordering the mussels in white wine and capers sauce.

Madam T Vietmanese

This second branch of the friendly Vietnamese restaurant from across the Chao Phraya, with its limited but fresh array of Vietnamese dishes and prompt, unobtrusive service, is a welcome addition in a condo heavy neighborhood. The comfort of the colorful and relaxed dining room also makes a change from the slightly fussier La Dalat up the road. The place is just so cute, the food so fresh, eating at Madame T makes you feel healthy and warm inside.

Man Ho

Man Ho occupies an elegant, spacious dining room on a second floor corner of the JW Marriott. It’s everything you expect from a long-standing five-star hotel restaurant. You’ve got efficient captains who’ve been waiting over the same Thai-Chinese families for years; and even if you’re new to the place, the service still manages to be both brisk and ceremoniously courteous. The Cantonese and Szechuan food served here is truly excellent, too, placing Man Ho in the top league of high-end hotel Chinese restaurants in Bangkok, whether you’re going for dim sum or a la carte.

Oskar

Tucked down a soi best known for its nightlife, Oskar Bistro is a restaurant with a slightly clubby vibe. It certainly packs a lot of things under one roof: a hearty menu, a long list of drinks and a DJ. The decor is fuss-free, and so is the French comfort food, even though the chef, Julien Lavigne, is classically trained and worked with the Michelin-starred Pourcel brothers.

Pagoda Chinese Restaurant

An upscale Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese cuisine that manages to stay innovative whilst also embracing age-old cooking techniques—think classic chicken beggar and stick rice with crab. The pagoda-inspired ceiling and colorful lacquered tiles evoke the timeless grace and elegance of the Middle Kingdom.

Peppina

Team Appia’s strictly Naples-style pizza, made to Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana rules, stars a tangy and pillow-soft crust, only slightly chewy with charred bits from the blazing hot oven. This allows the simplest pies, like the Marinara with its perfectly acidic San Marzano tomato sauce, to shine—though you’d be remiss not to take in a full multi-course feast of pastas and sharing steaks in this warm but well-polished space.

Pizza Massilia Sukhumvit

Taking over the space that used to be Smith, the second branch of Pizza Massilia has jazzed up the industrial chic decor with its signature blue color scheme, contemporary baroque decor, pretty wallpaper and, of course, a huge wood fire oven covered with shiny golden tiles. With pizza chef Michele Fernando hopping on board, Pizza Massilia has introduced a new, crispier pizza dough made with imported organic flour from producer Mulino Marino. Pizzas feature classic toppings like margherita as well as more adventurous options such as Fassone beef carpaccio and crab meat and bottarga.

Quince

With its cozy garden and sun-dappled dining room, Sukhumvit’s organic-sourcing trailblazer is the kind of place that makes you stick around from brunch until late. Rest assured you’re in fine company. Spotlighting the very best of produce (vegetables from organic farms in Hua Hin and Laos, wild-caught seafood), the hearty and homey Mediterranean-inspired fare is made for sharing, ideally over wine from the painstakingly put together list of smaller, organic European labels.

Siam Tea Room

Rows of fresh baked items and takeaway tea sets draw guests into this charming Thai cafe and Western bakerfy straight from the otel's Thawan Duchanee-crowned lobby. Nostalgic flavors draw like yum som chun combine tangy pomelo, green mango and Thai bitter orange with braised pork belly, while massaman curry with sweet potato provides heart confort food. Don't miss the old-school Thai milk tea.

SORN

The latest restaurant to try and remedy Bangkok’s insatiable hunger for southern Thai cuisine sees Supaksorn Jongsiri, the owner of Baan Ice, go back to his roots once more in a refined and elegant setting. Sourcing ingredients fresh daily from across 14 southern provinces, his approach to cooking focuses on traditional techniques, from charcoal and clay pot cooking, to pressing and squeezing fresh coconut juice. Taking on the customary Thai sharing style, the menu charts the likes of yellow curry with young mangosteen and gu fish and the must-try morning glory with coconut rice and baby shrimps.
