About: The spin-off of Issaya Siamese Club (#21 in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants) provides probably the best-equipped culinary studio in the city, while chef Ian Kittichai personally hosts one class every month. They also bring in huge-name collaborators like three-Michelin-star chef Alain Passard (see details below). 

 

Classes: Issaya Siamese Club Recipes Class (B2,000) covers four dishes and takes place daily from 11am-2pm, one day advanced booking required. Chef Ian’s classes cost B4,500. This Jun 14-17, Alain Passard of L'Arpège throws cooking classes from 11am-2pm (B5,900/person) and hosts a chef’s table from 7pm (B12,500 including wine). Read more on page 16. 

 

About: A graphic designer and lecturer at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang by day, Monwadee Siripremruedee built this spacious and chic Ekkamai studio to host all kinds of workshops across multiple disciplines. There is no division between teachers and students, just a group of people who come together to share ideas and help improve themselves. 

 

Classes: Coming up this Jun 4, the “Design Your Own Character” class focuses on creating soft-toned, cute characters from watercolors. Seats are limited to 12 people at B2,800 per person. On Jun 10 and Jun 24, the “Creative Stockphoto” workshop teaches you how to take and edit great pictures using your phone, then sell them online. Also limited to 12 people at B2,500. The “Copy Writing & Story Telling” workshop takes place on Jun 18, when the people behind the self-help Facebook page Kiwtum will reveal their storytelling tips. The class costs 2,500 with no limit on the number of seats.  

 

About: One of Siam Discovery’s flagship stores, ODS focuses on affordable home decor pieces, jewelry and other accessories from breakthrough Thai names including the Demark Award-winning labels Trimode and Plural Designs, ceramics from Yarnnakarn Art & Craft Studio, and pop art-inspired furniture from 56th Studio and Cast. They also devote time to various craft workshops every month.

 

Class: Every class hosted at ODS collaborates with an international artist brought in from abroad. Mieko Fujimori, the seventh generation owner of Awagami Papermill, just flew in from Japan to teach an orizome (Japanese paper pattern dying) course last week. We don’t have details on their next class for now, but check their facebook page for updates. 

 

About: Central Embassy mall's huge revamp of its top floor has transformed the area next to its VIP cinema. On top of delicious restaurants, the Art & Design section features a high-ceilinged, library look-alike, Open House Bookshop by Hardcover, whose owner has curated some 20,000 rare art books. Right in the center of the book shop is a section dedicated to all kinds of workshops, ranging from flower decoration to comic book illustration. Through Jul 2, all classes are hosted for free!

 

Classes: Coming up on Jun 24-25, the “Flower Workshop” partners with the team from One Day Wall Flowers to teach you how to arrange flowers for parties and play with colors. Sessions run from 1-7pm for free. 

 

About: Nestled in Bangkok’s old town, Charm-Learn Studio is the brainchild of Silapakorn graduates Thanita "Maii" Yothawong, Chanchai "Bub" Boriboon and Natthapol "Mick" Wannaporn, who all previously worked in the media. The studio started out giving ceramics workshops before expanding to photo and fabric dyeing.

 

Classes: The ceramics course spans three days and teaches you how to create pottery through at B6,000 per person. Check their schedule on Facebook. The one-day Ceramics Underglaze Painting class teaches you how to apply beautiful colored patterns to pottery before glazing. Held every two months, the indigo dyeing course takes four days at B3,500 per person with materials included. Other non-regular courses include product design, a slow-life organic workshop by Uncle Ree and a bicycle tour. Upcoming class: 6-hour ceramics painting on Jun 3 for B2,300. 

 

About: Wiwan Lertphokanont shares the expertise of her family’s four-decade-old silk-weaving company with the public. Located in the middle of Thonglor Soi 13, The Loom is set up as a community for people interested to learn more about silk or simply on the look-out for a new weekend hobby. The studio also sells its own silk products and weaving related materials.

 

Classes: The initial two-hour workshop (B1,800) teaches basic weaving techniques and lets you weave your own scarf. The follow-up course (level 2-5) teaches you to create free-form and traditional patterns and mix them with embroidery techniques (B1,800/class for 2.5-4 hours). Students are required to pass the initial class before registering for the latter. The half-day scarf class (B2,400) takes three hours and you will be weaving a longer scarf. The studio also welcomes kids aged six and above. Open for class everyday by appointment.

About: This event organizer mainly sets up DIY workshops for CSR campaigns, putting the focus on all sorts of home decor-related activities from bouquet making to garden organizing. Aside from big-scale company events, it also hosts terrarium (smallscale eco-systems) workshops for small groups of students.

 

Classes: The schedule is not regular, but is generally held once every two or three months at B1,200 per person with materials included. Check the Facebook page the upcoming workshop in June and call ahead for reservation.

 

About: The owner of this leather accessories-making school, Boonchai Boonnoppornkul, began as a vintage car fanatic who turned the leather seat upholstery from classic vehicles into handmade bags. Now three years after first opening, the modern-looking studio has attracted over a thousand students and expanded into a three-block building. 

 

Classes: Mha offers four-hour leather camera strap making classes (B2,500), eight-hour  leather doll making classes (B2,500) and four-day workshops which go into a all aspects of leather craftsmanship. Their “Staycation” course (B6,000) includes 16 hours of leather bag making and three nights’ accommodation at Wyh Hostel upstairs.
