Singapore's new group chat app reminds us of IRC in the 1990s
Connect in chat rooms with like-minded folks. Just like the good old days.
Sure, technology has made it much easier to keep in touch with everyone, but when you have more than 1,000 friends on Facebook, it almost feels like you’re hoarding memories of people you’ve crossed paths with on a digital platform (everyone does it; us included). Technology has also made it easier to meet new people, with apps like Tinder and happn, but that too has become a little convoluted and dense. That’s where Wander comes in.
Instead of shouting into digital space and waiting for some form of reciprocation from your “friends”, why not make some new ones? This new social app is set to connect people with similar interests through its group messaging platform, a little like what Internet Relay Chat (or more lovingly known as mIRC) was back in the day. (For clarity's sake, mIRC was a chat client that made “#” hot before hashtags were even a thing).
We had a quick look-see, and while you can always create your own chat group and make it either public or private, existing groups at the moment include #PokerClub (to organize regular poker sessions), #Cycling, #Jujitsu and, our personal favorite #TinderHorrorStories. It's not all silly stuff, though. Some folks have been using it to connect with fellow entrepreneurs and other productive things like that. You can send text, images and gifs, just like any other chat app.
