This new whisky bar serving sumiyaki is Tanjong Pagar’s new gem
It’s the sort of place you'll want to keep secret among friends.
We previously reported that Tanjong Pagar is becoming a fabulous place to spend a weekend, what with the opening of new restaurants like Australian contemporary bistro Thirteen Duxton Hill, Sichuan restaurant and cafe from Chengdu Birds of a Feather, Asian-focused cocktail bar Native and of course the newly relocated Kilo Lounge. Now there’s going to be another reason you’ll want to head to this hot-again neighborhood.
New bar The Wall pairs whisky with delicious sumiyaki dishes, with an aim to make whisky appreciation more accessible and friendly. Housed in a gorgeous two-storey conservation shop house along the main stretch of Tanjong Pagar Road, The Wall features exposed brick walls, part of the original early 1900s construction, complimented by warm, dim lighting, heavy-timbered ceilings and bottle-lined walls. Amid these ramshackle-chic walls, the furniture is another story: burgundy, leather, tufted sofas and a VIP lounge where the serious whisky drinkers can drink and nosh within crimson, velvet drapes, a gramophone and a beautiful chandelier.
On the food front, there's an extensive sumiyaki menu. Whisky and sumiyaki pairing sets start from $49 while the chef’s omakase with whisky is priced at $168. The staff is on hand to answer questions, of course. On the drinks front, they’ve separated them into different kinds of whiskies hailing from various parts of the world for easy browsing with the usual players like Balvenie, Glenlivet and Macallan making an appearance alongside rarer ones like the Yamazaki 50 Years. Don't worry, there are tasting notes for each of them. There are other spirits, too, of course, and a few classic cocktails like the Manhattan, Old Fashioned and Negroni.
The Wall is located at 76 Tanjong Pagar Road and is open Mon-Sat from 5pm-1am.
